The overview

Big Mountain Excavation is an owner-operated excavation contractor serving Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Walla Walla and the surrounding Tri-Cities area of Washington. We handle site preparation, grading, foundation excavation and earthmoving for homes, shops, additions and small commercial builds across the Columbia Basin.

The business has been operating for more than 8 years and is fully insured. We work from your plans and coordinate with your builder and engineer so excavation fits your schedule rather than holding it up.

01

Excavation for Homes and Builds in the Tri-Cities

Good construction starts with good dirt work. We handle excavation for new homes, garages, shops and additions throughout the Tri-Cities, cutting to the elevations on your plans and leaving a level, buildable site for the crews that follow. From a small addition in Kennewick to a full homesite out near Walla Walla, the goal is the same: a stable, well-drained base that lets your build start right.

We work from your plans and coordinate with your builder so excavation stays on schedule.

Site Preparation and Grading

Site prep is where every project begins. We clear and grade building pads, balance cut and fill to reduce haul-off, and establish drainage that carries water away from the structure from day one. Proper grading helps prevent the settling and ponding that show up later on pads that were not compacted or sloped correctly.

For acreage properties around the Tri-Cities, we also build the turning and staging area your framing and concrete crews will need once the excavation is done.

Foundation and Basement Excavation

Foundation excavation is the most critical cut on any property. We excavate for full basements, crawlspaces and footing trenches to the depth and elevation your plans call for, accounting for bearing soil and local frost depth so the foundation rests on material that will hold the load. Every dig is backfilled with the right material and compacted for the forming crew and inspector.

We install footing drains and surface drainage that move groundwater away from the foundation, because good drainage is what separates a foundation that stays dry from one that does not.

02

Rock, Hard Ground and Difficult Access

The Columbia Basin has its share of hard ground, basalt and rocky soils, and an under-equipped crew will stall on material we handle routinely. We bring the right equipment and experience to break, lift and remove rock that would otherwise turn a planned dig into a slow fight.

Where rock can be reused on site for retaining or erosion control, we stockpile it for you. Where it has to leave, we manage haul-off so your lot stays clean.

03

Drainage and Grading for Tri-Cities Soils

Soil across the Tri-Cities ranges from sandy, well-drained ground to silty soil that holds water. The right approach to excavation and drainage depends on what is actually in the ground, and we plan for the conditions we know to expect before they become a problem.

We plan drainage first, size foundations and trenches to the actual soil, and bring the right equipment for the ground.

04

Permits, Locates and Coordination

We arrange 811 locates before any digging, work around existing underground utilities, and handle permits and inspections where required. Cutting a line that was never located is how excavation jobs turn into emergencies, so we do not skip it.

We coordinate with your builder, engineer and the utility companies so excavation is not the part of the project that falls behind.
